What Are The Advantages of a Portable Generator Over a Permanently Installed Generator?

Sep 21st 2021

The advantages of a permanently installed generator are obvious. The generator is already in place and it turns on automatically when the power goes out. You do not have to leave the comforts of your home to turn it on.

What many people overlook is that there are many advantages to portable generators over permanently installed generators, typically referred to as Standby Generators. Did you know that changing the oil yourself on your Standby Generator might void the warranty? That’s right. Only a licensed technician is allowed to service many of the permanent standby generators sold on the market. Do your research! A required service contract is typically a few hundred per year.

Here is a short list of advantages of a portable generator over a permanently installed generator:

NO RED TAPE. No long waits for costly permits or installation.

INEXPENSIVE INSTALLATIONS. Portable Generators can be installed for less than half the cost of a permanent installation.

FUEL EFFICIENCY. Most standby generators use over-sized engines which burn up to 3 times as much fuel as a portable generator.

MOBILITY. You can bring your power to the place it is most needed. Unlike a permanently installed generator, if you sell your house you can take the generator with you.

No yearly service contracts.

DIY. Maintenance can be performed easily and inexpensively. Change your own oil and replace the oil filter and air filter.
